It was first published in 1973, and translated into English, and French, the following year. Banished to a remote Siberian village in 1897, Lenin rented a comfortable room in a private home.

Also, the Gulag was on a scale unlike anything in tsarism. In 1917, before the revolution, around 28,600 prisoners were serving sentences of hard labour. Between 1929 and 1953, something like 18 million people passed through the gulag. The architects of the camp system were clear as to its progressive credentials, as were its Western admirers.
