Sarat Maharaj was born and educated in South Africa during the Apartheid era. He did his PhD in Britain on “The Dialectic of Modernism and Mass Culture: Studies in Post War British Art”. He was a professor of art history and art theory at Goldsmiths College in London in 1980-2005 and is currently a professor at Lund University and the Malmö Art Academy.
